AI Pirate Weather

December 21th, 2023

Starting to experiment with artificial intelligence to generate the weather predictions with a pirate voice. I am able to feed the AI 5-day weather forecasts for 3 locations in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and it comes back with an overall weather prediction for the country. I also have the AI generate a picture with a pirate ship in the ocean on what the current day's weather looks like on the ocean. I take this information and automatically post it on Facebook and Instagram daily at 4AM.

Website Overhaul

August 25rd, 2022

I'm putting in the many hours of work to finally make this website look good instead of just being plain pages with data. The weather data is the same, but the look and feel are completely different. It's also now mobile friendly. New things like being able to submit new location requests are being added, and hopefully with all this work more people will use the site. I've got a lot more to do, I hope you enjoy where it's headed!

e-Paper Project

November 21st, 2021

Raspberry Pi Zero with e-Paper finally working to display weather in a picture frame, but it has to be plugged in to update. The nano timer TPL5110 from Spark Fun seems to only output about 3.5V no matter the input voltage. That isn't enough to power the Pi so it's a useless board. I'll have to try something else in order to power the system from a battery and have it update and shutdown automatically. The e-paper also is a disappointing display as it's still very streaky. This project may need to be shelfed.

Python on Raspberry Pi

July 31st, 2021

Software completed for generating weather onto e-Paper via Raspberry Pi. Problems with the HAT on the Raspberry Pi giving the e-Paper a faded/streaky look. Confirmed with using 8 wire connection being clear vs the HAT connection. New Raspberry Pi ordered without HAT. Being on a remote island, it'll be a while before new parts arrive.

Old Maps of the Turks and Caicos Islands

May 12th, 2021

I found a bunch of old maps of the Turks and Caicos in digital formal which identify many locations, ruins, etc. The original files are HUGE at about 1GB each, which are great if you're planning on printing these. If you just want to view them on your computer, you'll have a much easier time with the compressed versions I created.

For most people:
If you want to view these maps on your computer, this is the download you'll want. You can view them in most photo viewing programs as you would any other photo. To download the compressed webp format images which you can view on your computer, click here for the 26 MB zip

For the geeks:
If you want to geek out with these maps on your computer, these files are about 100 times larger than the above compressed versions. Although they will look clearer, they are also much harder for your computer to process. To download the images at about 125MB each in tiff format click here for the 1.3GB zip

For reproducing on paper:
This would be the download to use for taking the images to a professional printer to repoduce them. The images are about 1GB each, so they are basically too large for a normal computer to view. To download the images at about 1GB each in tiff format click here for the 8.7GB zip

Comparison Page

April 24th, 2021

Set up a comparison page to sort locations by their daily wave height. Started the interactive map work.

Tide Heights

April 15th, 2021

Added the tide heights. Oddly they seem lower than what other sources are predicting. I've reached out to the feed source to see if there is a reason why.

New Web Addresses for Locations

April 14th, 2021

The web page addresses have changed. All locations now use the same base Perl code to generate the predictions. This will make adding more locations easy.

Weather Pirate is born

April 12th, 2021

I started this site. It pulls in data from different sources and averages them to come up with the charts and graphs for the weather predictions. Just a little side project I started so I know when it's best to take the kayak out to the deep water fishing. Others requested the same information, so the project is growing. Hope it helps you too.
